Our Bordeaux blend is a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The fruit has been hand picked from some of the oldest vines on the Freycient Coast of Tasmania. Open fermented, hand plunged, then matured for 18 months in new and old French oak barrels. The wine is full bodied with great tannins and structure. Dark crimson in colour, it has ripe fruit flavours with hints of cherry and blackberry.
Located in Cranbrook on Tasmania’s East Coast, Craigie Knowe is one of the oldest vineyards in the state. John Austwick, one of the pioneers of the Tasmanian wine industry, established the original 5ha plantings of Bordeaux varieties in 1979. He chose the site for its rich volcanic soils and long hot summer days. He produced consistently intense and elegant wines and the vineyard became well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The vineyard was sold in 2009 to an owner who made significant improvements to the property, including the installation of frost protection and a new trellis system in the vineyard and the restoration of a gorgeous circa 1842 sandstone and bluestone homestead. Current owners – the Travers family – bought the 13ha property in 2013. The vines had been left unattended for two vintages and the vineyard was in need of care. They embraced the task with passion and enthusiasm, installing a new irrigation system and bringing the vines back to vitality and health.
