While virtually every other grape variety would be challenged by 139g/l of residual sugar, riesling is a crusader of impeccable balance due to its whirlwind of high acidity, sweeping across the dainty palate and whisking the sweetness into an ether of dryness. Pear Eau de Vie, ginger, quince and citrus chutney stream across the mouth before being corralled into the long, precise, delicate finish.
Sydney-siders Greg Melick and Francis Douglas, both wine-loving Barristers, had been interested in establishing a vineyard for many years. In 2002 Greg finally found the ideal site in the Coal River Valley which consisted of approximately 14 hectares of grazing land on well-drained, north east facing slopes, with cracking clay over a calciferous base. The name Pressing Matters is a metaphorical representation of the Vaslin Bucher basket press style and the lawful background of its founders. The label was designed by contemporary Czech artist Tom Samek- now based in Hobart Tasmania, symbolically capturing the balance of these wines and their establishment. Greg has been a passionate consumer of wine involved with wine judging both nationally and internationally for nearly 20 years. His two favourite wine growing areas are Burgundy and Mosel; Hence, the vineyard has only been planted with the two ‘Noble’ varieties Riesling and Pinot Noir.
