Pooley Butchers Hill Pinot Noir is from the Belmont vineyard in Richmond, right next to the Pooley cellar door. The Butchers Hill Pinot Noirs have a softer, earthier character harking back to a more traditional Burgundian wine style. Overlooking the Coal River Valley and historic Richmond Village, the vineyard is on the side of Butchers Hill, facing north where it captures the sun all day. The soils are well drained dolomite with a limestone underlayer. The Butchers Hill vines were planted in 2003 and every vintage has exceeded expectations! The 2011 vintage is a deep burgundy red with a faint purple rim, the nose offering layers of bramble, rhubarb, and raspberry over cracked pepper, mushroom and smoky cedar spice. This wine offers gravelly, chewy tannins and a long, seductive and lingering palate, with 10 or more years cellaring potential.
