This riesling is defined by a long spine of slaty acidity, but balanced by textured complexity, flavours of feijoa and grapefruit and aromas of tea rose, cumquat and oceanspray. It’s hard to see past the perfect food match of freshly shucked Tasmanian Oysters. Suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians. A near perfect vintage, made with little intervention to capture the flavours and textures of the vineyard.
Coal River Valley
Just 30kms north east of Hobart in the Coal River Valley we discovered this unique site. Sitting below the imposing Mount Lord, with views over Pitt Water, the property is beautiful, rugged and somewhat daunting. Proprietor, Robert Hill Smith and winemaker Louisa Rose, intrinsically linked with Eden Valley Riesling, had tasted and talked about Tasmanian Riesling on many occasions over many years. They were enthralled by the bracing steely backbone of these wines, reflecting and reminding them of the cold and wild climate of the Tasmanian Coast. As Louisa says “The small block of mature Riesling vines, hiding in the rather larger plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir was an irresistible temptation to work with. Having tasted and admired Tassie Riesling for many years, the opportunity to make one had to be … well … destiny.” And the rest just happened.
